Engaging on place naming requests

A new engagement framework for place naming in the Northern Territory PDF (18.4 MB) has been developed to deliver a strengthened process around engagement for the naming of a place, particularly in respect of dual and Aboriginal place naming.

The framework outlines the Place Names Committee’s expectations for engagement on place naming requests, identifies ‘interested persons,’ recommends relevant stakeholders that should be involved, and provides a clear process on how to engage on place naming requests.

The framework supports a shared understanding of requirements for engagement and roles of both people making place naming requests and stakeholders being engaged in the process.

Seeking the views of people and organisations that may have an interest in the proposed name, or the place to be named, helps to ensure that place names:

• are appropriate for the place
• are not offensive or derogatory
• commemorate people who are fit and proper for commemoration and their family are supportive of their name being used for the place
• align with local government and land council ideas for place naming
• meet public expectations and showcase history, culture and stories that are meaningful to the community.
