Tanami Road upgrades

The Northern Territory Government is upgrading and sealing 150kms of the Tanami Road in Central Australia, a jointly funded project between the Australian and Northern Territory Governments.

The first package of works (portion 1) is 60kms in length between Yuendumu and 30kms short of Floodout Creek

Portion 1 of these works commenced in July 2022 and is expected to be completed by mid-2023.

The second package of works (portion 2) is 90kms in length between 30kms short of Floodout Creek and 30kms short of Refrigerator Bore.

Portion 2 are due to commence mid-2023 and be completed by mid to late 2025.

These works will improve access to remote communities and improve road safety and flood immunity in the region. The upgrades will improve access for heavy vehicle traffic such as freight operators using the Tanami Road.

These upgrades are part of the Roads of Strategic Importance (ROSI) program, which will continue to upgrade priority sections of the corridor to improve connectivity, flood immunity, safety and access as well as economic development for the region.

Please see over for a map of the works area.
