MVR privacy statement

The Motor Vehicle Registry (MVR) provides licensing and registration services on behalf of the Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics.

The MVR is committed to protecting your privacy and only collects personal and sensitive information about you which is either required by law or is aligned to a lawful requirement to perform our functions under the Motor Vehicles Act 1949, or as a matter of public interest in one of our public safety services.

Information that is collected is done so in accordance with our obligations under the Information Act 2002 and its Information Privacy Principles (IPPs) which governs how we collect, use, protect and destroy information that we hold.

Collection

The MVR must collect your personal information as well as licence and registration information in order to carry out the activities and functions of our business.

Personal information that is collected includes:

  • your name
  • date of birth
  • contact details (address, phone number and email)
  • photographic images
  • registration history
  • biometric data
  • licence history (including sanctions and medical information)
  • any supporting documentation that you supply to us to support an application.

Failure to supply your personal information to us may make you ineligible to do business with us.

Collection methods

We collect personal information in a number of different ways. This includes but is not limited to:

  • when you are first enrolled as an MVR customer
  • anytime you submit an application form including any supporting documents
  • anytime you tell us that your personal information has changed
  • anytime you conduct business using our online services
  • anytime you conduct MVR business at Australia Post or a remote police outstation.

We can also collect personal information given to us by other sources. This includes but is not limited to;

  • health professionals
  • law enforcement agencies
  • interstate licensing and registration authorities.

The MVR is required by law to collect sensitive information about:

  • your physical and mental health if it relates to your ability to drive
  • your traffic and criminal offence history if it relates to the issue or renewal of a driver licence and any occupational authorities, such as the 'H’ (hire or reward) and ‘D’ (driving instructor) endorsements that are attached to a driver licence.

Any personal or sensitive information collected will only be disclosed to you or other bodies having a lawful reason to request the information.

Use and disclosure

The MVR will only use or disclose your personal information if it relates to the primary reason in which it was collected, or for a secondary purpose related to the primary reason where you would reasonably expect us to share the information.

Examples of when we might use your data for a secondary purpose includes the below.

To verify identity documents you provide to us through the Commonwealth’s Document Verification System (DVS). The DVS is a secure online system that allows us to electronically verify identity documents issued by a range of Australian, State and Territory government agencies. The DVS will only confirm whether the identity document you have provided is valid or not.

We disclose your personal information to other interstate licensing and registration agencies and to Austroads. Personal information is shared through an Austroads system known as the National Exchange of Vehicle and Driver Information System (NEVDIS).

NEVDIS is a secure portal created to facilitate the exchange of driver licence and registration details between licensing and registration agencies. NEVDIS is accessed when you apply to transfer your driver licence or vehicle registration from one state or territory to another.

However, we can also use and disclose your information if:

  • it is required or authorised by law
  • you give consent for us to use or disclose it for another reason
  • it is required for law enforcement or health and safety purposes.

If you do not consent to the MVR using or disclosing your personal information, you may be ineligible to conduct business with us.

How we protect your personal information

The MVR’s data is secured and protected by Northern Territory Government (NTG) ICT systems in accordance with the NTG Digital Security Policy, the NTG Data Governance Framework and Northern Territory Public Sector Organisations Records and Information Management Standard PDF (447.0 KB).

The MVR will take reasonable steps to destroy or permanently de-identify personal information if it is no longer needed for any purpose in accordance with our records retention schedule periods. Access to or correction of your personal information

You can apply to access personal information held by the MVR such as your driver licence or vehicle registration.
